The Museum of space history

The history of cosmonautics in the “city of aviation” starts with the building of the Museum. It is an expressive building with a dome, inside which there is the planetarium, one of the outstanding examples of futuristic Soviet architecture. About and imagined future in space at the time. All-Union popularity of the building took on, when his image graced millions of matchboxes Kaluga factory “the Giant”.

To the creation of the Museum of Tsiolkovsky in the 60-ies of the last century had a hand in other space heroes — Gagarin and Korolev. The latter made the most notable contribution: the basis of the collection became the subjects admitted in 1967, from the design office Queen: missiles, propulsion, space vehicles, measuring devices, tools, spacesuits, food warmers. And Yuri Gagarin literally laid the first stone in the Foundation of the Museum — just two months after the first flight into space.

The exposition begins with this event, and from the earliest human attempts to break away from Terra firma. The rocket “the East” is preceded by Chinese gunpowder rockets, and kites, Lomonosov rotary-wing machine, aircraft Mozhaysky and, of course, the works of Tsiolkovsky. However, the materials svjazannye Konstantin Eduardovich, for the public, hardly accessible, especially valuable exhibits are not displayed at all. In the permanent exhibition only of the book Tsiolkovsky, who was in space flight “Research of world spaces by jet devices”, “Space rocket trains”, “the Goal of space travel”. These rarities are carefully kept under glass.

The practical history of space exploration presented in the best possible way. Not just sketches, Photos, scale models, but almost any spacecraft, made in the USSR, can be seen at the exhibition areas of the Museum. Of course, these are copies — the originals are either buried in the dust of distant planets, or burned in the atmosphere or still circling in their orbits, is currently classified as space debris. But copies exact, full, detailed: first artificial satellites, lunar and interplanetary automatic stations — brilliant, elegant, like their prototypes before starting. Next — descent modules of manned vehicles, are already very real. Burned-out heat-protective layer of oxidized metal, a striking closeness is edifying spectacle in our time, when flights into space in the eyes of many, ceased to be the reason for the title of Hero.

The most ambitious exhibit stands outside the rocket “Vostok”. Not a replica, and backup the “East” that took Gagarin into orbit. And the monument to the first astronaut in human growth stands in front of the entrance to the Museum: a familiar wide smile, outstretched to the sides hands. By remarkable coincidence, has modeled his young sculptor Alexey Leonov — the namesake of the first man, published in open space. The same bronze Gagarin is eighty miles from the space Museum, the Park “ethnomir” (there is a monument to two pioneer space — Tsiolkovsky and the Queen). A second copy is located in the U.S. Houston — near the monument to John Glenn, the first astronaut of the USA who have committed an orbital flight.

Local peculiarities

Tours are conducted in Russian, English, German and French. Available excursions for individual visitors. For greater clarity on the big screens to show educational films and videos from the orbit. And from excursions it is better not to reject it without explanation you run the risk to get lost among the instruments and devices of unknown purpose.

The Museum has a planetarium. In order to keep up with the Yaroslavl colleagues (Cultural and educational Center. Tereshkova ), the administration of the Kaluga Museum in 2009 became the newest projector of the German company “CarlZeiss”. Visual effects with the passing planets and galaxies are not inferior movies in 3D.

Very popular tours for kids and games educational programs for schoolchildren, based on the principle of competition between two teams. They require no special preparation and are held in the planetarium with a demonstration of the effects of the starry sky. During the program children are encouraged to wear a space suit or to unravel a coded message from another planet.

In addition, the Museum can be photographed in the suit, watch a video in the hall of rocket and space technology, buy Museum publications, Souvenirs and multimedia products.

In the State Museum of the history of cosmonautics named after K. E. Tsiolkovsky also includes: the House-Museum of K. E. Tsiolkovsky, opened in 1936, the first anniversary of the death of Tsiolkovsky, the apartment Museum of Tsiolkovsky in the city of Borovsk of Kaluga region. and the House-Museum of A. L. Chizhevsky, Russian scientist, one of the founders of space science.
