April 12 – Day of aviation and cosmonautics

On April 12 the whole world celebrates Day of aircraft and Astronautics.

This is a special day – a day of triumph of science and all those who are today engaged in the space industry.

Russia marks cosmonautics Day in commemoration of the first space flight by Yuri Gagarin. The holiday was established by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated 9 April 1962.

April 12, 2010 isposed 49 years since the first flight of man in space. And did it our compatriot Yuri Gagarin. 108 minutes spent in space opened the way for other space explorers. For a short period of time since the first flight into space man has visited the moon, explored almost all the planets of the Solar system, but the first flight was the most difficult and dangerous.

But the confidence and optimism, the desire to conquer space overcame all obstacles. Addressing all the inhabitants of the Earth before launch on April 12 1961 Yuriy Alekseevich said, “Dear friends, relatives and strangers, countrymen, people of all countries and continents! After a few minutes a mighty spaceship will carry me off into the distant spaces of the Universe. What can “the tell you in these last minutes before the start! My whole life seems to me now dniprokran moment. All that has been lived, what has been done before, was lived through and done for this moment. You know, it’s hard to understand the feelings now, when I imagine the hour of trial to which we have been preparing long and passionately. Hardly worth talking about those feelings that I felt when I was asked to make the first such flight in history. Joy!

No, it was not only joy. Pride! No, it was not only pride. I felt great happiness. To be the first in space, to engage in an unprecedented duel with nature – could one even dream big! But after this I thought about the huge responsibility that rested on me. Be the first to fulfill the dreams of generations of people, the first to pave the road to space for humanity. Am I happy to be going on a space flight! Of course, happy. After all, in all times and epochs people have experienced the greatest happiness to participate in new discoveries. “Over an hour he will become the most famous man of the Earth, but first turn around the Earth spaceship with a man on Board was a credit to many people first and foremost, the General designer of space ships Sergei Korolev.

Gagarin’s flight made the hypothesis of practical human activity in space a reality, has opened a new direction in the development of civilization, and this is its enduring scientific value.

The first Soviet cosmonaut was proposed to restore the temple of Christ the Savior

One of the first with the initiative to restore the Bolsheviks destroyed the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, made in 1964, the first cosmonaut of the Earth Yury Gagarin, reported “Interfax” a close friend of Gagarin, Colonel Valentin Petrov BBC.

According to him, the proposal Gagarin made after their joint trip to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra and visit there the Church-archeological Cabinet. “When we came to the layout of the temple of Christ the Savior, Yura looked inside, looked at it and said to me: “Valentin, look what beauty was destroyed!” – the Colonel told.

Shortly after this, he continued, Gagarin, speaking at the plenary meeting of the Central Committee on education of the youth, openly offered to rebuild the temple. “Gagarin’s motive was very simple: do not raise patriotism, not knowing their roots. Because the temple of Christ the Saviour is a monument of military glory, the people who go to defend their Motherland should know it,” – said Petrov.

According to him, the response to the first cosmonaut was “awesome, there came a storm of applause. The Bureau, of course, was seriously scared, but nothing to do against Yuri Alekseyevich they, of course, could not.”
